Image Optimization

Optimizing your images prior to putting them on your web site is absolutely Paramount!
Our starting package is 100 MB of disk space, and it is large enough for most of our client’s web sites. Please visit our websites portfolio and check on the detail provided for each web site we have designed, you will see that you can publish a lot of images within one such package, except if you do not spend the time to optimize your photos before publishing them.
Since a couple of our clients have contacted me in this regard saying that they could not upload an image to the server, I’ve decided to post this.
The upload limit is 2 MB, which is ample enough for most media (except videos), and I have set the maximum size for the images at 1024 x 1024 pixels, which I consider large. Please be aware that the larger your images, the faster you will fill the space on your server. I personally like 800 pixels, although it does appear very large in small monitors with low resolution, it looks large enough on a 24″ with 1680 by 1050 pixels resolution.
I will not go into the detail of how to optimize an image for the web here, because there are many web sites out there that have already done that. However – I am putting a link to a web site that offers to optimize images for web sites and email bellow, crop and re-size them online for free (Their upload limit is 5 MB). It’s actually pretty cool – You can add a border with the color of your choice if you wish, you can rotate it, sharpen it, and even give it a tint 🙂
Here are my suggestions for the settings (if I may):
- New size: If it’s an horizontal picture, select width and type 800 (max. 1024), if it’s a vertical one, select height and type 800 (max. 1024)
- Rotate: Well… this one is self explanatory,
- Sharpen: 40 is a good default, they give you a preview so if you do not like it, you can always start over,
- More Advanced features such as Tint, Exposure, Contrast, and Color Saturation… Have fun!

If you have images larger than the 5 MB limitation of web-re-sizer, then send them to me through Skype (phdsigns) or email them to me (phd(at)phdsigns.com) with your specifications, and I will optimize them for you.
